I just wanted to say I have had a blast playing this game every time I get the chance to play. It's fast, fun and interesting. I am hoping that GMT expands it with either new armies or covers other periods, like the Seven Years War.

and as far as vassal goes, go to vassal engine
Click on Install vassal for windows, and install vassal

then go to
http://www.gmtgames.com/nnman/manv1b.zip

Use vassal to open that file, type a username and a password and select an online game

the hard part is finding someone online the same time as you so you can play

and your question on the cards, a unit card can be played as
1) An attack, adds a die roll to the value of the unit
2) Defense, add the value on the card to the units defence
3) A restore of a unit from damaged status

This is an awesome cheat sheet for the game

Thanks Charles,
What kinds of things do the cards do for you and to you?
Hobiecat,
Some time this week I'm going to try to figure out how Vassal works. I looked at it for the first time last night and could make niether heads nor tails of the thing. Seems like no matter what I do I am looking at a sea of blue boxes with numbers that do not seem quite random in them.

BTW once as a lad I went out in on a hobiecat one time. We eventually sobered up enough, to figure out that the best thing to do was take down the sail and push it back to shore.

If you would like to play on Vassal I would be happy to teach you just hit me up.

diagonal attacks count as a "2" movement. 1 up one sideways. Only Cav and bombardment can do this move

Thanks looks neat. Is diagonal moment allowed?

OK, I guess that makes sense. As long as the unit has the movement points to leave the formation it's in, and enter the formation it want to go to, it seems logical that it should be able to do it. I was thinking that going from "Deliberate Assault…

You can make a single change to any formation, by paying the movement cost. I can know of no rule that states you must be in Movement to Contact, to make the change. David

The last rules issue we're debating is the "Formation Change" rule. The rules say that only one formation change per Game Turn is allowed. Scott interprets that to mean that a unit can go from Travel to Hasty Assault, for example, as a single form…

I had somebody do Wargames on me in the 'Short Scenario' [latewar/C3i]; so we ended up only playing turns 8&9!

Played a game if Vikings last night, and, although I won, it was a little unsatisfying. The complete, and nearly devastating, randomness of the cards almost undid me. Overall, it was an OK game, although there is some ambiguity in the movement rules…

Really haven't figured out Vassal but I am located in Sacramento CA. Once I get some help on it then I'm in for some gaming.

Anyone else have difficulty finding opponents available for online play (e.g., Vassal) during Pacific Time hours? I know I do. I though a group to help identify people who fit that profile might be useful to others.

DOWNTOWN is such, such a great game. Quite a puzzle for both sides. And I love how the scenarios show the progression of air vs air, air vs ground, and ground vs air technology over the years! ELUSIVE VICTORY looks so good as well!
