Profile Information

Your introduction to consim gaming:
My first game was AH's D-Day, a gift my brother received for his birthday, but didn't play..... I started in miniature wargaming (Wesencraft's Practical Wargaming), but always played SPI and AH titles. I love older miniatures and the games designed for them. To bad there's not a "vintage wargaming" group.... perhaps I need to start one.
Your favorite game(s):
Ogre, Cry Havoc (Standard Games), Squad Leader, Any SPI QUAD, Games from the 70s....
What game(s) are you currently playing (solitaire, FTF, PBEM, etc.) or wish to play next?
Conflict of Heroes, CC:E, SPI QUADs via HexWar
What game(s) have you played recently?
CoH, M44, CC:E, C&C: ACW, Blue and Gray: 2nd Bull Run
In general, how much time do you spend gaming?
About four hours per week
How big is your game collection?
~260 games
Your local game club(s) and/or where you reside (let's network!)
Not involved in a club; considering starting one, though
About Me
I've taught history for 25 years, at every level including university. Lately I've developed and interest in Print and Play games. I'd like to see more interest in the history of the wargame hobby and some sort of organization devoted to the discussion of the topic. Perhaps a vintage or classic wargames society.
Personal Interests (favorite activities, movies, shows, books, music, etc.)
I enjoy hiking, reading history and science fiction, music from the 70s, and I'm involved in park management issues/state parks preservation. I also have an interest in radio, having once built and managed an FM station.
Married 19 years to a very tolerant lady.

Whatever happened to Don Lowry?

Does anyone know how to get in touch with Don Lowry? He and his wife published Campaigns Magazine in the 70s and early 80s, my favorite hobby magazine and (along with Wargamer's Digest) the reason I got into gaming. I'd like to look him up and send him a "thank you" note.

Achtung Schweinehund! A Boy's Own Story of Imaginary Conflict , by Harry Pearson

Achtung Schweinehund! A Boy's Own Story of Imaginary Conflict , by Harry Pearson. A friend sent me this book late last year and I must say, it is the best read I've had in a while. It is bent towards miniature gamers, but it has a certain appeal to all of us who bought their first box of Arifix when we were just tikes. This book is for anyone who refought the last great war on the bedroom floor. Pearson is a sports columnist for the Guardian, and the book has a journalistic flair. It's a scream… Continue

Hi Dave
Thanks for Joining Miniature Games. My first game was AH Bulge my mom bought it for me just a year or two too early. Had a rough time figuring it out.

It was -27 and generally 0 to 5 above the whole time with a major storm that left 2 1/2 feet going back into Idaho and 3 feet in Spokane - then when I got into the mountains and passes in central Washington, it was the same story!

Welcome aboard, Dave. I've been promising everyone on this board that I've taken the shinkwrap off of Conflict of Heroes and planned to get down to playing a game, but I just haven't gotton the time due to a heavy travel schedule and a bunch of projects that have come into being right while I'm trying to get my finals squared away for my students. I've read the directions so many times that I think I have a sense of the flow of the game, but can't wait to try it out. Your post gives me motivation to do this!

OK, I guess that makes sense. As long as the unit has the movement points to leave the formation it's in, and enter the formation it want to go to, it seems logical that it should be able to do it. I was thinking that going from "Deliberate Assault…

You can make a single change to any formation, by paying the movement cost. I can know of no rule that states you must be in Movement to Contact, to make the change. David

The last rules issue we're debating is the "Formation Change" rule. The rules say that only one formation change per Game Turn is allowed. Scott interprets that to mean that a unit can go from Travel to Hasty Assault, for example, as a single form…

Played a game if Vikings last night, and, although I won, it was a little unsatisfying. The complete, and nearly devastating, randomness of the cards almost undid me. Overall, it was an OK game, although there is some ambiguity in the movement rules…

Anyone else have difficulty finding opponents available for online play (e.g., Vassal) during Pacific Time hours? I know I do. I though a group to help identify people who fit that profile might be useful to others.

DOWNTOWN is such, such a great game. Quite a puzzle for both sides. And I love how the scenarios show the progression of air vs air, air vs ground, and ground vs air technology over the years! ELUSIVE VICTORY looks so good as well!
