About Me
Born in Iowa & attended Catholic schools. Played many of the Milton Bradley war games. Received "Stalingrad" (AH) as a Christmas present as age 12. In college (University of Iowa) discovered Panzerblitz & Luftwaffe. After college I moved to Des Moines and took up public accounting. There I met the first actual "wargamers" Some of those guys I still play games with to this day.

The 70's and '80's in Des Moines were my "golden age" of wargaming. I was single, shared a house with a fellow wargamer for much of the time so we played lots of games. SPI & Avalon Hill in the '70s, Victory Games, GDW, Battleline in the '80s. We went to GenCon in Milwaukee most years. Big games of World in Flames, multi-player Flat-Top, War in the Pacific, Air Force/Dauntless, etc.

In the 90's my company moved me first to Minnesota and then to the Chicago area. I also got married to my wonderful wife who graciously allows me to carry on with my gaming hobby. I made wargaming friends in both locations and usually was able to continue FTF gaming on a weekly (or so) basis. These were the years of GMT Games (GBOH and DIF) and Avalanche (GWAS) for me. In 1999 my life changed again when my son was born. Right now he is more interested in Star Wars and learning to play the guitar than his old man's war games, but there is hope for him in the future.

In the 2000's I started to gravitate to more "lite" fare: some Euro games, Memoir '44, C&C Ancients, Twilight Struggle & other CDGs, etc. Maybe getting older means I don't have the stamina for the hard-core grognard stuff, maybe it's just a trend in the industry. I'm always up for some SPQR though!
Personal Interests (favorite activities, movies, shows, books, music, etc.)
Movies: "Apocolypse Now", "300", "Elizabeth -The Golden Age", "Watchmen", "Inglorious Basterds"
Books: "Guns of August", "Bomber Command" by Max Hastings.
Music: The Rolling Stones.
Activities: Biking on the Illinois Prairie Trail. Monstercon

Steve; It has been a while since we last touched base. Work and work related travel has swollowed up much of my free time over the last year. Things have eased up lately so if you ever have some free time it might be fun to get together again and toss some dice. "Unhappy King Charles" of "Command & Colors" or anything else would work. Hope all is well

Great, that's excellent; what I think is that it couldn't sound any better. Until further notice, let's make it SPQR then at Games Plus on Saturday, August 1, at around 10:00 a.m. which, as you're probably already aware, is when the store opens. In the meantime, I'll try to read up and familiarize myself with the rules and/or GBoH simplified rules...really looking forward to getting together and to finally get a chance to actually have an opportunity to play/learn SPQR.

Steve,
Just wanted to inquire if you'd like to meet and open game something THIS particular weekend, that's this Saturday, June 6, 2009, in the game room at Game Plus store in Mt. Prospect, IL (www.games-plus.com)? It's normally and regularly boardgame day at this store on the first Saturday of the month every month. The store opens at 10:00 a.m. Lately, I too have a keen interest in the more playable end of the spectrum of wargames including playing C&C Ancients and Tide of Iron, etc. Haven't ever played SPQR (or, for that matter, any other of the GBoH titles) but THAT would certainly be the ONE title I'd like to start off with the most! I don't know the rules, including the simplified version of the rules, but if you're interested to try to teach/play it, I'd certainly be receptive to trying to play it...I DO have copies of SPQR and all the modules, including having a copy of the GBoH simplified rules. Otherwise, I am already familiar with and could jump right in with playing either C&C:A or Tide of Iron.

Games I'm Playing 2009

January - Our second play of Warriors of God. We played the 100 Years War scenario. We were over halfway through it when we realized that we had the leader movement rules all wrong! Leaders can only cross a single border from a singe area each action impulse! We had been moving anybody and evrybody each impulse. Needless to say, we stopped the current game and will re-start next week. Also our first play of Lion in Winter (last week) was all wrong. How embarrassing for a cou… Continue

January & February - Red Star Rising: Intereresting and different approach to The Great Patriotic War.

March - Montrose Triumphs (TCS) : Fun little DTP battle game, like 30 Years War Quad, sort of.

March - Holy Roman Empire: Also fun. Struggling with the rules. Want to try this four-player.

March - My annual trip to Cedar Rapids to play a long weekend of games with one of my old gaming buddy. We played Manouver (GMT), C&C Ancients, Twilight Struggle. Luftwaffe 2007, Tide of Iron &… Continue

Of course, it took me less than two seconds to make a decision to order this, and no more than 60 seconds to get the website, plop down the PayPal payment, and complete the order! WOW!

I remember when GMT redid FOR THE PEOPLE, one of the last Avalon Hill games, and rescued it. Some tweaks and improvements since, too. I bet L2 holds off on PANZERGRUPPE GUDERIAN until the shine wears off on MMP's latest IGS offering, A VICTORY DEN...

Another related thing, since Eric has done his homework pretty thoroughly; the 'followon' games; i.e., all the various CDG's done by GMT ... Also, Fortress Europa is getting an L2 makeover ... ...and did things like 'Blackbeard' get an accounting?

I really want to see the SPI ModQuads done with newer, more-modern maps, and a bit of a rules/combat cleanup. Great games at a very nice scale.
